Catania president arrested in Italian match-fixing probe

Posted by Betman on 07:42

Antonino Pulvirenti, president of Italian Serie B second-tier football club Catania, has been confirmed as one of seven people to have been arrested over alleged match-fixing activities in the country.

Although Italian authorities have not released details of the Serie B matches the investigation is focused on, Catania police have confirmed that the seven people arrested are accused of committing “fraud in sporting competition”.

“At least five games, maybe six, were fixed and sums of money given to players,” said Catania's public prosecutor Giovanni Salvi, according to the BBC. “Other individuals are being investigated but they will remain unnamed.”

The news comes after iGaming Business reported last month that police in the country had arrested more than 50 people as part of its ongoing investigation into alleged match fixing.

Prosecutors stated that they had uncovered an alleged network between club presidents, coaches, players and some management members.
