Spanish football clubs hit by match fixing allegations

Posted by Betman on 01:00

Spain’s state prosecutor has summoned representatives from Spanish La Liga Football Clubs, Real Zaragoza and Real Levante regarding suspicious match play and allegations of match fixing regarding a 2011 football match.

The game under investigation took place at the end of the 2010-11 season, when Real Zaragoza beat Real Levante 2-1

The state prosecutor’s office in Madrid announced that a number of players had been summoned for questioning on October 3.

The match under investigation was played during the last round of the 2010-11 season which saw Zaragoza stave off relegation.

Two goals from current Atletico Madrid captain Gabi Fernandez gave Zaragoza run out 2-1 winners.

The La Liga president, Javier Tebas, included the match in a list of nine matches to be investigated in a report in June 2013.

Zaragoza said in a statement that it had ‘no knowledge of any circumstances connected to the investigation’ but that it would ‘cooperate with any requests’ made by the prosecutor.

Match fixing is a crime in Spain and can lead to prison sentences for individuals and a club being banned from official competition.
