The planned legislation of the Netherlands’ online gambling market, has caused industry controversy following the report by Dutch news sources that several members of the ruling parliamentary coalition supported a unified 29% gross gaming revenue tax.
The 29% tax rate would place online gambling services on the same rate as land-based gambling operators.
Dutch newspaper the Telegraaf reports that the rate is supported by a number of VVD and PvdA coalition party members, who have argued that a uniformed tax rate would create fair market conditions between legacy Dutch based gambling operators and new operators seeking to enter the market.
MPs supporting the 29% tax charge are reported to want to lower the tariff to 25% after three years of legalised online gambling in the Netherlands.
The Netherlands Parliament had re-opened its discussion on efficient tax levels in June 2015. Industry commentators believed that policy makers would settle on a 20% revenue tax, in-line with European industry practices and in order to make the market appealing to international operators.
Following a 2015 industry review by Dutch Games of Chance Authority (KSA), lawmakers announced reported that 200 operators had expressed interest in acquiring potential market licensing.
2016 has been outlined as the year in which the Netherlands finally reforms it gambling framework, with current laws dating back 50 years. At present no date has been set by the government for the planned released of the Netherlands new gambling framework.
