Ladbrokes and William Hill face Australian probe over live betting

Posted by Betman on 08:16

Ladbrokes and William Hill have become the subject of an investigation by police in Australia over the live betting services that both bookmakers are currently offering in the country.

Started by the Australian Communications & Media Authority (ACMA), the probe has been handed over to the Federal Police amid claims that the bookmakers are breaching national betting laws.

The investigation surrounds the way that both bookmakers accept bets for sports events that are already underway.

According to newspaper The Australian, the ACMA in April received a complaint that alleged Ladbrokes’ ‘Quickcall ‘and William Hill’s ‘Click To Call’ services are circumventing laws that restrict live gambling in the country.

Australia’s Interactive Gambling Act 2001 states live betting in the country is only allowed via telephone communication.

However, the ACMA complaint suggests that the bookmakers have improperly sought to bypass the legislation by allowing such wagers to be made over the internet, providing the punter’s microphone on their computer is switched on.

Both Ladbrokes and William Hill have denied any wrongdoing.
