Footballers named in Spanish match-fixing investigation

Posted by Betman on 14:02

A total of 41 professional football players, coaches and directors have been named in a match-fixing investigation in Spain.

According to various reports, prosecutors have alleged that almost €1 million ($1.4 million) was paid to Levante players to lose a Spanish Liga top-tier match against Zaragoza at the end of the 2010-11 season.

Zaragoza needed to win the match to avoid relegation from the top division.

Current Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera is one of the most high profile players to have been named in the case.

The Spanish international left Zaragoza for rival Liga side Athletic Bilbao in 2011 before joining the English Premier League side this summer.

Herrera is alleged to be one of 10 people who withdrew tens of thousands of euros funded by Zaragoza in order to pay bribes.

Ecuadorian midfielder Jefferson Montero, formerly of Levante but now with English Premier League outfit Swansea City, has also been named by prosecutor Alejandro Luzon.

Montero’s alleged involvement was not disclosed in the court document while Swansea City said the club had not been contacted over the matter.
