The Ligue de Football Professionel (LFP), which operates the French
football league, has announced sanctions for dozens of players found to
have breached rules on betting.
A total of 87 players have been punished for breaching rules set down by the LFP and the Fédération Française de Football, following an investigation led by French gambling regulator Arjel. The investigation is continuing.
The sanctions range from suspended bans to fines of between €500 ($680) and €1,500 and unpaid work to be carried out at their respective clubs.
The most serious cases involved those who were categorised as ‘Group Four’ offenders, who have been fined and will be forced to carry out such community service at their clubs. Those in Group
Four placed negative bets against their own clubs.
Those in Group Three placed bets totaling more than €500 on various French football games while players in Group Two placed bets totaling less than €500.
Professional footballers that play in France have been barred from betting on LFP matches since new regulations were introduced by the LFP and French Football Federation (FFF) on February 1, 2012.
