Bitcoin Trading Down 15.1 Percent to Kick of 2017

Trading in the anonymous digital currency bitcoin was down 15.1 percent at $768 a coin as of Wednesday afternoon.  It was back up to $811 Friday morning but the instability comes after China announced it had begun investigating the bitcoin exchanges on suspicion of market manipulation.

Bitcoin has become the most popular payment processing platform used by the North American-facing online gambling sector.  Operators continue to monitor this situation but remain relatively unfazed based on Gambling911.com conversations.

Bitcoin started 2017 with a 120 percent gain over 2016, crossing the $1000 mark for the first time since November 2013.

Bitcoin is now down more than 17% in 2017.

Κατέθεσαν οι τρεις πρώτοι μάρτυρες του Koriopolis

Δύο αστυνομικοί και ένας υπάλληλος του ΣΔΟΕ κατέθεσαν την Δευτέρα (9/1) στο πενταμελές εφετείο κακουργημάτων όπου διεξάγεται η πολύκροτη δίκη για το σκάνδαλο των στημένων αγώνων.

Ξεκίνησε στο πενταμελές εφετείο κακουργημάτων η εξέταση των μαρτύρων κατηγορίας της υπόθεσης των στημένων αγώνων του 2011, γνωστή και ως «Koriopolis». Αρχικά κατέθεσαν δύο αστυνομικοί. Ο πρώτος είχε κάνει τις έρευνες στην οικεία του Αχιλλέα Μπέου, με τον δήμαρχο Βόλου να του λέει: «Τι βρήκατε; Το λάπτοπ της κόρης μου και 17.000 δολάρια» και τον αστυνομικό να το επιβεβαιώνει.

Ο δεύτερος ήταν αστυνομικός του τμήματος Παλαιού Φαλήρου και είχε δεχτεί ανώνυμες καταγγελίες για τους Ζαβαντία, Καρακούλια και Δημόπουλο που αφορούσαν στημένα παιχνίδια και παράνομο στοιχηματισμό.

Τρίτος μάρτυρας κατέθεσε ο υπάλληλος του ΣΔΟΕ, Βαλαβάνης, σχετικά με τις έρευνες που έκανε η υπηρεσία του στους τραπεζικούς λογαριασμούς και τις καταθέσεις των κατηγορουμένων, σχετικά με το αδίκημα του ξεπλύματος βρώμικου χρήματος.

Στο ξεκίνημα τις διαδικασίας ο Αχιλλέας Μπέος είπε προς την έδρα ότι έχει απομαγνητοφωνηθεί μόνο το 20% των συνομιλιών που κατέγραφε η ΕΥΠ και ζήτησε να απομαγνητοφωνηθούν και οι υπόλοιπες.

Η πολύκροτη δίκη θα συνεχιστεί στις 19 Ιανουαρίου με τους επόμενους μάρτυρες κατηγορίας, μεταξύ των οποίων θα είναι και δημοσιογράφοι.

Betting Site Gives Donald Trump Odds of Impeachment 4-1 Within Six Months

Paddy Power was offering 4/1 odds on Trump being impeached within his first six months in office. The payout would be US$40 for every US$10 bet.  Those who believe he will not be impeached within the first six months could still win US$10 for every US$40 wagered (the $40 will be refunded should this bet be a winner with gamblers realizing a $10 profit).

The world’s largest online betting site was also giving Trump’s chances of finishing his four-year term at short 7/4 odds.

Last week various media outlets reported on a dossier, compiled by a person who has claimed to be a former British intelligence official, that claims the President-Elect engaged in kinky sex acts with prostitutes while in Russia.  More specifically the unverified reports alluded to these prostitutes urinating on a bed the current US President, Barack Obama, and his wife Michelle once slept in. Cohen himself was mentioned in the dossier as having traveled to Prague, Czech Republic.  It has since been verified that Cohen was in the United States during the dates mentioned in the document.

Trump is due to be inaugurated this Friday January 20.  His win cost the Paddy Power website $4.5 million.

Ο μεγαλύτερος «απατεώνας» στην ιστορία του ποδοσφαίρου

Ο Κάρλος Ενρίκε Ραπόζο, με το ψευδώνυμο «Κάιζερ», για την ομοιότητά του με τον Φραντς Μπεκενμπάουερ, είναι γνωστός ως ο μεγαλύτερος «απατεώνας» στην Ιστορία του ποδοσφαίρου της Βραζιλίας. Ο λόγος; Προσποιείται ότι ήταν επαγγελματίας ποδοσφαιριστής για πάνω από 20 χρόνια, χωρίς όμως να έχει παίξει ούτε ένα λεπτό! Μία ιστορία ξεχωριστή, μοναδική, που βεβαίως έχει ξεπεράσει τα σύνορα της Βραζιλίας και «μετέφερε» πρόσφατα η ισπανική αθλητική εφημερίδα «Marca».

Στην δεκαετία του '70 και του '80, είναι σαφές ότι δεν  υπήρχαν μέσα ενημέρωσης όπως τα ξέρουμε σήμερα, οι περισσότερες μεταγραφές γίνονταν με συστάσεις. Ούτε καν με την βοήθεια του internet, που προσφέρει βοήθεια μέχρι τις μέρες μας, μιας και τότε δεν υπήρχε.

Ο Κάρλος, κατάφερε να υπογράψει με περισσότερες από 15 ομάδες, με τον χρόνο παραμονής του σε αυτές να μην διαρκεί περισσότερο από έξι μήνες. Ανάμεσά τους, Μποταφόγκο, Φλαμένγκο, Μπανγκού, Φλουμινένσε, Βάσκο ντα Γκάμα, Ελ Πάσο στις ΗΠΑ και ακόμη, η γαλλική Αζαξιό.

Ακόμα, για να συμπληρωθεί το βιογραφικό του, είπε ότι είχε παίξει στην Ιντεπεντιέντε της Αργεντινής. Πρωταθλήτρια στο διηπειρωτικό (δύο φορές μάλιστα το 1973 και το 1984, πολυνίκης του Libertadores (με 7 τίτλους). Βεβαίως είχε Κάρλος, στις ημέρες που εκείνος ισχυρίζεται την συμμετοχή στην ομάδα της, αλλά ήταν ...Αργεντινός!

Δεν υπάρχουν βίντεο ή φωτογραφίες του Κάρλος να παίζει σε κάποιο παιχνίδι, αφού πάντα κατάφερνε να μην παρουσιάζεται στο γήπεδο, με ανέκδοτες ιστορίες, που υπερβαίνουν κάποιον που προσποιείται τραυματισμό.

«Εκείνη την εποχή ήταν πολύ εύκολο, άγγιζα το μηρό έμενα εκτός προπόνησης. Δεν υπήρχε κάτι δύσκολο, ένας φίλος οδοντίατρος μου έγραφε μία γνωμάτευση και γινόταν αμέσως αποδεκτή».

Άλλοτε πάλι πριν από μία προπόνηση, προσποιήθηκε ότι μιλούσε στο τηλέφωνο στα αγγλικά με έναν ξένο σκάουτερ, όταν ένας προπονητής που είχε ζήσει στην Αγγλία, κατάλαβε ότι έλεγε ανοησίες, πράγματα ασυνάρτητα. Αλλά και πάλι τίποτα. Κάποια στιγμή όμως τα πράγματα δυσκόλεψαν.

«Κάποτε ο πρόεδρος της Μπούνγκα, μου ζήτησε με αυστηρό τρόπο να βγω για να παίξω. Σκέφτηκα ότι κάτι έπρεπε να κάνω. Έτσι πιάστηκα στα χέρια με κάποιους οπαδούς που ούρλιαζαν στην εξέδρα. Αποβλήθηκα πριν από την είσοδο στον αγωνιστικό χώρο. Αργότερα, στα αποδυτήρια, είπα στον προπονητή μου, ότι δεν μπορούσα να μείνω σιωπηλός, ακούγοντας τις απειλές για την ομάδα μας. Με φίλησε  και την επόμενη μέρα, μου ανανέωσαν για έξι ακόμα μήνες, το συμβόλαιο, που έληγε».
Σήμερα, ο Κάρλος είναι personal trainer και εξακολουθεί να διηγείται τη μεγάλη ποδοσφαιρική του ιστορία, όπου κι αν τον καλούν.

Player Banned for Match Fixing

SYDNEY – (Associated Press) - A former Australian Open junior boys' finalist has been banned from the sport for seven years by the Tennis Integrity Unit after being found guilty of match-fixing offenses at a minor tournament in 2013.

Police in New South Wales state charged Nick Lindahl with intentionally losing a tennis match on which friends had placed bets at an ITF futures tournament at Toowoomba, west of Brisbane, in September 2013.Lindahl was convicted last April of using corrupt conduct and fined by a criminal court in Australia.

The TIU disciplinary hearing, held by independent anti-corruption official Richard H. McLaren, found Lindahl guilty of charges of contriving or attempting to contrive the outcome of an event, and failing to co-operate with a TIU investigation. He was banned and fined $35,000, the TIU said in a statement on Tuesday.

A betting agency detected unusual gambling patterns and reported it to police. Lindahl reached a career-high ATP ranking of 187 in 2010, when he lost in the first round of the U.S. Open.

Two others were also sanctioned by the TIU for corruption. Brandon Walkin, 22, was given a suspended six-month ban and Isaac Frost, 28, was found to have already served a suspension for failing to cooperate with a TIU investigation.

The TIU said in October 2013 that Lindahl refused to provide his cell phone for forensic download, as requested, in violation of the regulations.

Lindahl, 28, retired from the sport in 2013, but the ban prevents him from resuming playing professional tennis for the seven years of the ban, or from attending any tournament sanctioned by the governing bodies of tennis during that time.

McLaren said Walkin, a singles player ranked No. 1,066, was given a six-month suspension after being found guilty of contriving or attempting to contrive the outcome of an event. The charges involved him passing a corrupt proposal to another party on behalf of Lindahl. He can return to tennis immediately.

Frost, 28, ranked No. 1,515 in singles, was found to have failed to co-operate with the TIU by refusing to supply his cell phone for analysis during the investigation. He served a period of provisional suspension from Oct. 3, 2013 to Sept. 4, 2014, and McLaren concluded that no additional suspension or any fine should be imposed.

Last Thursday, police in Victoria state charged an 18-year-old man following an investigation by detectives from the Sporting Integrity Intelligence Unit into allegations of match-fixing at a lower-tier tournament in Traralgon, 160 kilometers (100 miles) southeast of Melbourne, last October.

Police did not disclose the name or other details of the man, but said he will appear at the Latrobe Valley Magistrates' Court on March 2 charged with engaging in conduct that corrupts a betting outcome.

The start of last year's Australian Open was overshadowed by media reports that tennis authorities failed to properly investigate suspicion of match-fixing involving up to 16 players who had been ranked in the top 50 going back over a decade.

The allegations, released by BBC and Buzzfeed News, triggered wide speculation but no significant new cases. It forced the sport's four governing bodies - the ITF, ATP, WTA and Grand Slam Board - to create an independent review panel to investigate corruption and the effectiveness of anti-corruption practices.

The panel's interim review is expected to be released next month.

Trump boosts prospect of legalised sports betting in the US

The President of the American Gaming Association (AGA) has expressed his belief that Donald Trump taking office could lead to a repeal of federal law barring sports betting in most US states.

Speaking in his year-end conference call, Geoff Freeman referenced Trump’s appearance on the Fox Sports show a year ago, in which the incoming US president made the following comments about sports betting and daily fantasy sports (DFS): “I’m OK with it because it’s happening anyway. Whether you have it (PASPA) or you don’t have it, you have it (sports gambling).’’

There has been interest among television broadcasters and individual team owners in repealing the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), which is a federal law allowing sports betting only in Nevada, Delaware, Oregon and Montana.

In fact, the ascension of sports betting into what Freeman calls ‘mainstream acceptance’ took a leap two years ago, when NBA commissioner Adam Silver broke with predecessor David Stern in calling for its legalisation. This mainstream acceptance has been further emphasised by NBA, NHL, MLB and NFL owners partnering with leading DFS companies FanDuel and DraftKings.

Arnie Wexler, co-author of the book ‘All Bets Are Off: Losers, Liars and Recovery from Gambling Addiction’, agreed that sports betting has gone mainstream but rejected an argument put forward by the leagues that that since sports gambling is inevitable, it might as well be regulated.

He described it as ‘hypocrisy’ because leagues such as the NFL have a history of banning players associated with gambling, and reiterated his belief that they are only after a portion of the estimated $95 million in annual money wagered.

A 2015 report by global gaming-research company Gambling Compliance estimated legalised sports betting in America could produce $12.4 billion in annual revenue, which would roughly equal all revenue generated by the NFL.

Wexler, who runs a national 1-888-LASTBET hotline with his wife for those seeking help for gambling addiction, also likened DFS to a ‘gateway drug’ which enables teens and young adults to get hooked on other forms of gambling.

Is there too much data for marketeers?

A survey of senior marketers has revealed that the over whelming majority (96%) find improving data analysis processes a significant challenge. This is despite devoting an average of five hours and 36 minutes a week to the cause.

A Data Dilemma study of 151 UK senior marketers in August last year, also found that 80% believe they need to make significant inroads with data analytics and tools within the next two years to avoid falling behind competitors or losing out financially. This study was commissioned by Callcredit Information Group.

Steve McNicholas, Managing Director, Marketing Solutions, Callcredit Information Group, commented: “While marketers are prioritising the management of data, there is an overriding feeling that it should be delivering better business outcomes for them. At the same time, they know there’s a wealth of untapped opportunity to use data to extract more value but a lack of resource, and in some cases, expertise, is preventing them from unleashing it.

“The urgency to improve data analytics processes can be hard to reconcile given the high number of other priorities marketers are required to juggle on a daily basis. As a result, some are turning to off-the-shelf software packages, such as Excel, to keep things ticking along. The danger is that the early-movers, who have already invested in more robust data strategies, will over-take. Marketers must decide whether this is a price they are willing to pay.”

So what is it that gets in the way of improving data analysis? The causes were noted as a lack of budget (35%), time-to-value expectations (32%), a lack of human resources (31%) and underperforming data quality tools (30%). This wasn’t all and there were a number of other circumstances hindering progress such as imperfect data; with only 36% stating that they are extremely satisfied with the data they have access to.

71% meanwhile said that they feel overwhelmed rather than empowered by the data available, with 69% saying that they feel such data has distracted them from core marketing duties. Only a third said that they see themselves as ‘extremely effective’ at using the data available to understand their customers’ needs.

In response to these challenges, marketers are investing in data tools in an attempt to improve the status quo. 73% make use of web analytics and tracking tools and 67% utilise Excel and modelling packages to meet their goals.

Bet365 unveils new ‘Edit Bet’ option

Bet365 has added a new ‘Edit Bet’ function to enable customers to add, swap or remove selections from their bets.

The option can be used on unsettled straight accumulators before games have started or in-play, as well as for single bets, with players able to swap or add selections.

Edit Bet will become available when the ‘Cash Out’ option is live for all unsettled selections within a bet and when the outcome has not already been determined.

If a number of selections in an accumulator have already been settled, players will still have the option to use the Edit Bet feature.

When editing a bet, the current Cash Out value will be used as the new stake and all prices will be updated to reflect live odds on games in the accumulator, rather than the initial prices taken when the bet was first placed.

Football hits betting industry for £100 million losses this Christmas

Devastating to bookmaker balances will have been Premier League match day 18 (26-28 December) in which EPL title contenders Chelsea FC, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester United won their matches.

Issuing a trading update this Monday, FTSE-listed William Hill detailed to investors that it had taken a £20 million hit in December due to unfavourable sporting results in football and Racing, causing the bookmaker to revise year-end corporate earnings for 2016.

Independent bookmaker Sky Bet did not shy away from the ‘bookie bashing’, the bookmaker detailed to UK media that December 2016 had been its ‘worst month in living memory’, stating that it had paid more than £8 million on Christmas Day.

Sandro Di Michele Sky Bet’s Head of Public Relations commented on Christmas Period “Some people moan about getting socks for Christmas, but we didn’t even get those…Had it not been for Newcastle United losing to Blackburn Rovers it would have been the worst day in the company’s history and probably the industry”.

Watching the results, Industry analyst Regulus Partners has detailed that no bookmaker would have escaped Christmas 2016’s bashing, with William Hill’s severe losses expected to be replicated industry-wide as  operators gear up to announce full-year 2016 results in the coming days

Είναι πολλά τα λεφτά του τζόγου…

Σήμερα υπάρχουν 120.000 παράνομα «φρουτάκια» σε όλη την χώρα, εκ των οποίων τα μισά σε Αθήνα και Θεσσαλονίκη. Τουλάχιστον 30.000 παράνομες (το επισημαίνουμε) παιγνιδομηχανές βρίσκονται μόνο στην περιοχή της Αθήνας. Κι όμως! Ο κ. Καμίνης προσέφυγε δικαστικά κατά του ΟΠΑΠ, όταν οι νόμιμες μηχανές, τα VLTs, θα είναι στην Αθήνα μόλις 10.000!

Είναι μία πραγματικά περίεργη ιστορία. Υπάρχουν σοβαροί πολιτικοί, όπως ο κ. Καμίνης, που αντιμετωπίζουν αρνητικά τα VLTs, αν και είναι ο μοναδικός τρόπος για να καταπολεμηθεί ο παράνομος τζόγος. Μάλλον δεν γνωρίζουν το πραγματικό μέγεθος του προβλήματος…

Ας δούμε τα επίσημα στοιχεία της πολιτείας. Σήμερα λειτουργούν σε όλη την χώρα 120.000 παράνομες παιγνιδομηχανές, οι οποίες λειτουργούν σε καθεστώς αδιαφάνειας. Την ίδια ώρα τα φρουτάκια είναι μέσα σε κάθε ελληνικό σπίτι μέσω των 23 εταιρειών ηλεκτρονικού τζόγου! Το ελληνικό δημόσιο από αυτές τις δραστηριότητες δεν εισπράττει ούτε ένα ευρώ.

Κι έρχεται ο ΟΠΑΠ για να λειτουργήσει συνολικά 35.000 μηχανές σε όλη την χώρα (πολλές εκ των οποίων μέσα σε ήδη υπάρχοντα πρακτορεία του Οργανισμού) και να θέσει τέλος σε ένα παράνομο και αδιαφανές καθεστώς πολλών ετών. Μπαίνουν σε λειτουργία 35.000 νόμιμες μηχανές και εξαφανίζονται από την αγορά, από τις γειτονιές, 120.000 παράνομες. Από αυτή την νόμιμη δραστηριότητα το ελληνικό δημόσιο θα έχει έσοδα περισσότερα από 300 εκ. ευρώ τον χρόνο. Δεν είναι εύλογα τα ερωτήματα που δημιουργούνται από τις «αντιδράσεις»; Είναι σαν να αντιδρούσαν οι δήμαρχοι στις ΗΠΑ στο τέλος της ποτοαπαγόρευσης. Λένε ότι δεν θα επιτρέψουν τις πόλεις τους να μεταβληθούν σε Λας Βέγκας. Μα είναι ήδη! Και μάλιστα κάτω από συνθήκες πλήρους αδιαφάνειας.

Θα συμφωνήσουμε με όσους πιστεύουν ότι ο τζόγος δεν είναι μία «χριστιανική» δραστηριότητα. Αλλά υπάρχει! Αυτό δεν μπορεί κανείς να το αμφισβητήσει. Το ζητούμενο σε αυτή την περίπτωση κι εφόσον δεν μπορεί να εγγυηθεί την κατάργησή του, είναι να φροντίσει την διασφάλιση κανόνων διαφάνειας και νομιμότητας και ταυτόχρονα φορολογικά έσοδα για το κράτος, ώστε να υπάρχει, έστω κι έτσι, όφελος για την κοινωνία.

Όσοι έχουν σηκώσει την σημαία της επανάστασης κατά των VLTs, θα πρέπει να μας πουν τι έχουν κάνει στο προηγούμενο διάστημα για τον παράνομο τζόγο. Θα καταλαβαίναμε κάποιον δήμαρχο, για παράδειγμα, που είχε ξεκινήσει την εκστρατεία κατά του τζόγου στο παρελθόν. Θα ήταν ένας συνεπής άνθρωπος. Ας μας υποδείξει κάποιος, λοιπόν, έναν τέτοιο δήμαρχο. Κάποιον που κυνηγούσε τα παράνομα μαγαζιά, που προσπάθησε να προφυλάξει τους δημότες του από τον παράνομο τζόγο. Που έπαιρνε πίσω άδεις internet cafe, που οργάνωνε διαδηλώσεις έξω από τα κέντρα της ακολασίας.

Καταλαβαίνουμε ότι πρόκειται για μία μεγάλη βιομηχανία. Υπάρχουν συμφέροντα που θίγονται, όπως των Καζίνο. Τα Καζίνο κινδυνεύουν σοβαρά, καθώς το μεγαλύτερο μέρος των εσόδων τους προέρχεται από τους κουλοχέρηδες. Μεγάλο πρόβλημα, επίσης, υπάρχει και για τις εταιρείες του ηλεκτρονικού τζόγου, που επίσης θα χάσουν έσοδα. Και φυσικά πλήττονται οι άνθρωποι που λειτουργούν σήμερα τις 120.000 παράνομες μηχανές. Καταστρέφεται η δουλειά τους και απαξιώνεται η επένδυση που έκαναν σε μηχανήματα και δημόσιες σχέσεις…

Για να βρει κανείς τα μαγαζιά του παράνομου τζόγου θα πρέπει να τα έχει περπατήσει ο ίδιος. Στην Αθήνα, λοιπόν, δεν έτυχε να βρω κάποιον «περπατημένο». Βρήκα, όμως, στην Θεσσαλονίκη. Κι όταν του ζήτησα να μου κάνει μία περιήγηση με το αυτοκίνητο στις λέσχες της πόλης, με πέρασε από σαράντα (!!!!) και πλέον μαγαζιά. Κι αν δεν ήμασταν κουρασμένοι θα συνεχίζαμε! Είναι, πάντως, εκπληκτικό. Είναι ένας άλλο παράλληλος κόσμος μέσα στον δικό μας.

Αυτή η τεράστια βιομηχανία, λοιπόν, καταρρέει. Εμείς με ποιόν είμαστε; Με τους παράνομους ή με τον ΟΠΑΠ; Προσωπικά δεν γνωρίζω κάποιον που να έχει πραγματικά κερδίσει σε βάθος χρόνου από τον τζόγο. Ξέρω όμως ότι ο τζόγος είναι μία δραστηριότητα που είναι καλύτερο να την έχει κανείς νόμιμη και ελεγχόμενη από παράνομη και ανεξέλεγκτη. Κι από την άλλη, με ενδιαφέρουν τα έσοδα του ελληνικού δημοσίου. Προτιμώ τα λεφτά αυτά να πηγαίνουν σε κοινωνικά βοηθήματα από το να καταλήγουν στις τσέπες αμφιλεγόμενων παραγόντων των τοπικών κοινωνιών.

«Σκάει» η φούσκα του Bitcoin

Μετά το άλμα 80% που κατέγραψε το Bitcoin μέσα στο 2016, οι ειδικοί προειδοποιούν για «βίαιη διόρθωση» το 2017. Τα τελευταία χρόνια, το κατεξοχήν νόμισμα των «σκοτεινών συναλλαγών» του Internet - από εμπόρους ναρκωτικών και φοροφυγάδες– κέρδισε σημαντικό έδαφος και έγινε σημαντικό εργαλείο πιο «mainstream» χρηστών.

Το πρώτο ράλι κατέγραψε το Bitcoin το 2013, όταν οι κερδοσκόποι εντυπωσιάστηκαν με την ιδέα ενός νομίσματος που ξεφεύγει από τα δίχτυα του νόμου. Γρήγορα «τσίμπησαν» και οι επιχειρηματίες του τεχνολογικού κλάδου που οραματίστηκαν μια «εναλλακτική» πλατφόρμα για τις χρηματοοικονομικές υπηρεσίες.

Μετά την πρώτη κυβερνο-ληστεία, όμως, που έφερε το Bitcoin στο μικροσκόπιο των διωκτικών αρχών, το ψηφιακό νόμισμα έχασε το 80% της αξίας του. Έκτοτε, πολλοί παράγοντες της αγοράς έβαλαν «Χ» στο διαδικτυακό νόμισμα, θεωρώντας το ως ένα αποτυχημένο πείραμα των ψηφιακών χρηματοοικονομικών συναλλαγών –παρά το γεγονός ότι η τεχνολογία blockchain που βρίσκεται πίσω από το Bitcoin υιοθετήθηκε ευρέως από τον χρηματοοικονομικών κλάδο.

Από την αρχή Δεκεμβρίου, όμως, το Bitcoin κατέγραψε άλμα 31%, ωθώντας την αξία του στα 975 δολάρια την Κυριακή, με τη συνολική αξία των Bitcoin σε κυκλοφορία να υπερβαίνει τα 16 δισ. δολάρια. Ο Tim Draper, επιχειρηματίας και υποστηρικτής του ψηφιακού νομίσματος, εξηγεί ότι η ανάκαμψη αυτή αποδεικνύει ότι το Bitcoin έχει εξελιχθεί σε «ένα υπολογίσιμο εναλλακτικό νόμισμα όταν κάμπτεται η εμπιστοσύνη των πολιτών στο νόμισμα της χώρας τους».

Οι τιμές καθορίζονται κατά κύριο λόγο στην Κίνα, όπου πραγματοποιούνται το 90% των συναλλαγών περίπου. Πολλοί χρήστες του νομίσματος, πάντως, δυσκολεύονται να αντιληφθούν τη δυναμική πίσω από την εκτίναξη αυτή. Για την περιορισμένη διάδοσή του, πάντως, ευθύνεται η υψηλή μεταβλητότητα της τιμής του και το γεγονός ότι ελάχιστοι έμποροι αποδέχονται πληρωμές σε Bitcoin.

Κατά κύριο λόγο, το ψηφιακό νόμισμα χρησιμοποιείται από όσους θέλουν να μεταφέρουν περιουσιακά στοιχεία από τη χώρα τους στο εξωτερικό, για φορολογικούς ή άλλους λόγους που ξεπερνούν τα όρια της νομιμότητας, σημειώνει ο Micky Malka από τη Ribbit Capital που ειδικεύεται στις start-ups χρηματοοικονομικών εταιρειών.

Χαρακτηριστικό παράδειγμα είναι οι Κινέζοι που σπεύδουν να μεταφέρουν μεγάλο μέρος της περιουσίας τους εκτός των συνόρων, γεγονός που εξηγεί σε μεγάλο βαθμό την εκτίναξη του Bitcoin τον τελευταίο χρόνο, σύμφωνα με τους αναλυτές.

Rodrigo Duterte will shutter online gambling in the Phillipines

Rodrigo Duterte, the outspoken and hardline President of the Phillipines, has seemingly backtracked on a softer approach to online gambling regulation and moved to close it down entirely in the country.

In a speech which followed the announcement of the 2017 national budget Duterte stated that he would be “ordering the closure of all online gambling (firms)… All of them. They have no use.”

Duterte did not say anything more about the issue but Justice Secretary, Vitaliano Aguire II, confirmed to Inquirer.net that “the closure order was meant for all online gambling firms”.

As was to be expected the share prices of Philippine operators were hit and dropped considerably following the announcement. Shares in Philweb for instance declined 30% whilst Leisure and Resorts World shares fell by 20%.

Duterte took office back in June and one of his initial pledges, amongst many others, was that online gambling would be dealt with. This led to the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), the regulator, stopping the issue of online gambling licences and also saw Philweb shut down its e-gaming cafes.

In the weeks after this however there appeared to be a change of tune from the government with PAGCOR announcing plans to issue offshore licenses in September. The Philippines’ online gaming industry is believed to employ at least 50,000 local residents, with salaries notably higher than the average which has a positive trickle down effect for the country’s wider economy.
